Cooling Tower - Project Details

Development of engineering and design package for greenfield installation of a 3-Cell (32,000 GPM) cooling tower. New cooling tower system replaced an existing river water cooling system, requiring the integration of a new cooling tower, pumps, and piping into the existing cooling water piping system.

The expansion included the full range of SSI’s engineering and design services. Project scope included greenfield surveying, cooling tower foundation design, sump pit foundation design, pipe rack and pipe support design utilizing structural analysis software, process piping design, hydraulic analysis, piping stress analysis, electrical and instrumentation design, and project scheduling to meet customer deliverable and construction dates.

    • Mechanical Design Scope
    • Cooling tower pumps and piping were sized and specified according to a hydraulic analysis developed by SSI and were based on the new and existing cooling water system at the plant.
    • Analysis included a complete model of the existing piping system and the new cooling tower system.
    • Developed P&ID for new cooling water system and integrated it with the existing P&ID’s.
    • Piping was designed utilizing 3D modeling software. The model was developed based on surveying, field verification, existing drawings, and new vendor drawings.
    • Pipe stress was analysed utilizing Caesar II pipe stress software.
    • Civil and Structural Design and Analysis
    • Soil and Concrete analysis for cooling tower basin and sump.
    • Structural steel and concrete footer design for new pipe rack to accommodate new cooling water piping.
    • Developed 3D model in CADWorx for preliminary and final design reviews with client
    • Modeled all process equipment and process piping for ISO development
    • Developed all required fabrication drawings (piping isometrics, plans, civil, and structural)
    • Electrical Design Scope
    • Electrical distribution, new MCC, and etap distribution calculations
    • Cooling Tower instrumentation and controls
